I am still finding learning shutter speed difficult! Since going full manual settings on my camera last week my images are out of focus and grainy most of the time. I haven’t figured out the balance between ISO, aperture and shutter spend. I guess lots of practice, and maybe some more reading are in order!
I will stay positive and it will become second nature in no time, I will not go back to the av setting! Well let's hope so, now that I have give myself a taking too.

Brave woman - I am on AV because I just don't have the patience at the moment to go full manual! You're an inspiration.
I'm getting a new snapper soon and CAN'T WAIT. But for sure I am not ready to go full manual after all this auto time...I will be eagerly learning though..and will be back for tips!
It's funny b/c I went from full auto to full manual. I could NOT figure out the AV and shutter priority settings before understanding manual. I actually just used the AV setting a few days ago while trying to take pix while riding my bicycle. It worked out great for that purpose.
Good luck! You'll pick it up in no time. I always forget to adjust my ISO. Becomes a major pain when the lighting is low.
aww thanks guys ~
Hey Kelly,
Good for you! I think the general rule of thumb is a shutter speed of 1/200 for kids (because they're always on the move). I tend to use a slower shutter speed inside at our place to balance out my ISO and f-stop, anything over ISO-400 gives really me grainy images. I try and shoot in our front rooms as they have the best light, with ISO-200 or 400 depending on the time of day and then adjust my shutter speed accordingly. This is where you really have to play around until you find the best setting. I've found, looking back at a lot of my photos, I do shoot with lower speed than is normally recommended and I do get a lot of missed focus shots as a result. But, for me, that's better than the alternative grainy image.
Keep playing around, I've found that it's the best way to figure out the best settings :)
Here's a rule-of-thumb that I might have to print out and stick to my fridge!
